World Water Day 2008

Media Release 22nd March 2008

How Taking the Piss Saves Water on World Water Day

Today celebrates the 16th anniversary of World Water Day and Perth based company Urimat Australia has come up with a great way of saving water with its range of waterless urinals.

Perth, 22nd March, 2008 : The waterless urinal might sound like toilet humour, but a recent installation at Woodside Plaza in Perth is estimated to save a staggering 9 million litres of water a year. That's enough to fill nearly four Olympic sized swimming pools and is also 9 million litres of water from a single building that doesn't have to be contaminated with chemicals and detergents then flushed and treated again before returning to the water system. Importantly the use of waterless urinals can ease the stress on Australia's aquifers. If the water isn't being pumped up from the ground the risk of aquifers becoming salty is reduced.

"Water is a truly precious commodity and we all have a duty of care to look after our natural resources. If we can save 9 million litres from a single building, imagine how much water we can save by converting to eco-friendly systems." Said Peter Spaeni, Managing Director of Urimat Australia. "There are billions of litres of water every year, literally being flushed away. The good news is that we can save this water very easily with the right motivation." He added.

Dennis Buckle of CB Richard Ellis, Operations Manager Woodside Plaza, wanted to switch to an environmentally responsible systems and was impressed with the waterless systems offered by Urimat. Initially installed on five levels of the building, the waterless urinals proved so successful that DB Rreef, the owners of Woodside Plaza and CB Richard Ellis along with their chief tenant, Woodside Energy Limited, made the decision to extend the waterless systems throughout the complex.

"The Urimat waterless urinals are not just water friendly." Said Dennis Buckle. "We were also very impressed at how much they improved the level of hygiene and improved the odour in the toilets as well as being very easy to clean." He explained. "When you take the huge environmental implications into account as well as the financial and other benefits, it's something I would recommend all building managers investigate as a matter of priority."
